Why I love the Yorkshire Dales…

June 6, 2014

Here’s a guest blog from one of our supporters who has kindly shared his happy memories of the Yorkshire Dales.

‘Greenwood Leghe has special associations for me as my mother used to take me for walks there when I was a little boy, when we lived in New Village, Ingleton. We came to live there in 1940 when I was two years old, so my first ‘sense of place’ was Ingleton and, of course, the Yorkshire Dales. Although we returned to South Shields – my place of birth – in 1964, Ingleton was always special, and now, having spent a lifetime of travelling associated with my work as a preacher, I have recently returned, not just to Ingleton but also back to New Village! Every day the memories come flooding back- collecting sticks in Broadwood for the fire; rose-hips as part of the ‘war effort’; nature walks with my teacher; playing on the farm where my friend lived; going to Sunday School and making friends (some of whom still live here and remember me); the call of the Curlew; and the inspiring back-drop of Ingleborough which, over the years, has always drawn me like a magnet. Oh it’s so good to be home!’
